The prosecutor of the Kherson Region on the instructions of Russian Prosecutor-General Igor Krasnov has filed a petition with the court to recognize the Nazi crimes in the region during the Great Patriotic War (WWII) as genocide. This was reported by the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation on February 6.

The agency recalled that the territories that now make up the Kherson region, during the WWII were part of the Nikolaev and Zaporizhzhya regions of the Ukrainian SSR.

"During the preparation of the statement the Prosecutor General's office provided interaction with the authorities and law enforcement agencies, archival, scientific institutions and educational organizations, regional public movements and volunteers", - stated in the message of the Prosecutor General's office on its website.

It noted that the military of Nazi Germany occupied these territories in August 1941, and on March 13, 1944 the Red Army liberated Kherson. German troops, while in the region, tortured and killed both civilians and Soviet prisoners of war - people were shot or burned in a network of camps. In total, during the Nazi occupation of the Kherson region, more than 70 thousand people died from infections, hunger and violence by the invaders.

In addition, the Nazis tried to destroy industry and agriculture, various educational and cultural institutions and historical monuments in the region, looted and exported the property of factories and plants. The total amount of damage caused by the fascist troops amounted to more than 8 billion rubles in translation to the modern exchange rate.

The prosecutor of the Kherson region filed his petition in the regional court to protect the legal rights of the relatives of the dead residents of the region and the national interests of Russia. In addition, the submission of the petition will help to bring information about the victims of the Nazis to the world community and contribute to the return of historical justice.

Earlier, on February 4, the court recognized the Nazi crimes on the territory of Kalmykia during the Great Patriotic War as genocide. In the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia said that experts have fully recreated the picture of Hitlerite crimes against the security of humanity and the world.

Before that, in December 2024, the Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkaria recognized the crimes of the Nazi invaders on the territory of the republic during the World War II as genocide of the peoples of the USSR.
