TheUnited States and Mexico have reached an agreement on bilateral cooperation on a number of economic issues. Reuters reported on February 6.

"Mexican and U.S. officials agreed on Wednesday to continue an open dialog on economic issues such as strengthening regional supply chains and foreign investment traceability," the publication read.

Mexican Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Luis Rosendo Gutierrez said that in a meeting at the White House, officials from both countries discussed starting a dialog before the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA) agreement is renegotiated and replaced by the new USMCA, which is scheduled for 2026.

"The idea is to start working next week with a continuous exchange of information," he said.

Earlier on February 4, US President Donald Trump delayed imposing duties on goods from Canada for at least 30 days after speaking with the country's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

On the same day, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said the tariffs Trump imposed on Mexico, Canada and China were aimed at fighting fentanyl, not starting a trade war. He said Canada misunderstood the language in Trump's executive order, interpreting it as starting a trade war.

On Feb. 1, Trump signed an executive order imposing trade tariffs of 25 percent on goods from Canada, China and Mexico. Then he also promised to impose duties on goods from the EU. With this decision, Trump seeks to reduce the flow of the opioid fentanyl across the border, as well as the flow of migrants.
