The White House insisted on the need to relocate Palestinians from Gaza
The White House supports the idea of US President Donald Trump to temporarily relocate civilians of the Gaza Strip to other regions. This was stated by White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt on February 5.
"I can confirm that the president intends to rebuild Gaza and temporarily relocate those who are there," she said.
The speaker said the U.S. expects Egypt and Jordan could host the resettled people "temporarily." But she also declined to guarantee that Palestinians who want to stay in their homes would be given the opportunity to do so.
"There's no running water, there's no electricity. The president wants these people to live in peace. He intends to do that with this very bold new plan," added Livitt.
Earlier in the day, political scientist Alexander Asafov expressed the opinion that the US president's statement about Washington's plans to control the Gaza Strip is fantastic, as there are many international acts on this issue that will not allow it.
Also on February 5, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Trump's words, reminded that Russia's position on this issue is based on the two-state principle. This thesis, he emphasized, is enshrined in the relevant article of the UN Security Council.
In addition, The Wall Street Journal learned about Trump's conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which the American leader spoke about "prime real estate" in Gaza.
The day before, Trump suggested that refugees from the Gaza Strip should be resettled to more livable places. He told reporters that a hypothetical resettlement of Palestinians could take place in Egypt or Jordan (two countries that have repeatedly rejected the idea of accepting large numbers of Palestinian refugees) or in "other places" that "could be very beautiful, safe and nice."
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel. Israel began retaliatory strikes the same day.
