- FRG suggested that Trump should force countries to negotiate on Palestinian resettlement
US President Donald Trump should put pressure on Egypt and Jordan to negotiate on his plan to resettle refugees from the Gaza Strip to these countries. Tino Hrupalla, co-chairman of the Alternative for Germany (AdG) party, said this on February 5 on the air of German broadcaster ZDF.
"This should be treated critically - first of all, if neighboring countries in the form of Jordan and Egypt will not be integrated into this. That is, the plan has to be discussed and decided upon by the forces of the region. There can be no imposition from the outside here. <...> I believe that Trump should create some pressure for negotiations [among regional players]," he said.
The politician said the resettlement of 2 million Palestinians would not lead to security in the region.
Trump proposed giving the Palestinians a new place to be built at the expense of other parties earlier in the day. At the time, he said, the hypothetical resettlement could take place in Egypt or Jordan, two countries that have repeatedly rejected the idea of accepting large numbers of Palestinian refugees, or in "other places" that "could be very beautiful, safe and nice."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, for his part, reminded that Russia's position on this issue is based on the two-state principle. This thesis, he emphasized, is enshrined in the relevant article of the UN Security Council.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas subjected the territory of Israel to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
