An economist spoke about the consequences of a trade war between the U.S. and China

The trade war between the US and China will have a negative impact on the global economy. Russia is not a direct participant in this confrontation, but it may also face certain difficulties, despite the presence of some positive aspects. This opinion was expressed by Maxim Chirkov, associate professor of the Department of Economic Policy and Economic Measurements at GUU, in a conversation with Izvestia on February 5.
"Trade wars always have a negative impact on the world economy. However, there are positive aspects for Russia, as it stays away from new US trade conflicts," Chirkov explained.
According to him, China's retaliatory measures, including tough economic sanctions, have already started to restrict global trade, which will eventually lead to a slowdown in global GDP growth.
"Russia, being an open economy, will also feel the effects of the cooling of the global economy. However, the main blow will fall on the countries directly involved in trade wars, such as the US and China," Chirkov said.
According to the expert, the main confrontation will arise between the U.S. and China. This is a global economic competition that is changing the balance of power in the international arena. Although other countries such as Canada and Mexico will also be affected.
Moreover, the trade war between the US and China poses risks to the global economy, but also opens new opportunities for Russia, which can strengthen its position in the international arena by taking advantage of the situation.
"If the interaction between the US and China is disrupted, Russia can become useful for both sides. First of all, this applies to China, with which we have friendly relations, but also to the United States, with which economic interaction has not been completely stopped," Chirkov summarized.
Earlier, on January 31, Iqbal Guliyev, deputy director of the International Institute of Energy Policy and Diplomacy of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, named the countries interested in Russian oil exports in a conversation with Izvestia. According to him, China and India will remain the key partners in receiving Russian oil this year, taking the leading role in Russian oil exports.
