More than half of Moldovans opposed joining Romania
More than half of Moldovan citizens opposed the republic's accession to Romania. This follows from a survey published on February 5 by the Institute of Marketing and Sociological Surveys (IMAS) of Moldova on Facebook (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).
According to the results of the survey, if a referendum on Moldovan independence were held on Sunday, February 9, 31% of citizens would support the republic's accession to Romania, while 56% of respondents were against it. Another 13% of Moldavians did not give an answer.
This survey was conducted between January 16 and February 1. It was attended by 1130 respondents from 86 localities. The maximum sampling error is 3%.
Earlier, on September 3, 2024, the results of a social survey by the Moldovan company Date Inteligente (iData) showed that almost 60% of Moldovan citizens do not support the idea of unification of the republic with Romania. To the question "Are you for or against the unification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania?" 58% of respondents answered "against". The answer "for" was chosen by 34,1% of respondents.
The idea of reunification of the two countries was voiced by Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu back in April. In an interview with DC News, he supported a possible unification with Moldova, which could happen through the republic's accession to the European Union (EU). Then he pointed out that the past cannot be changed, so it is necessary to build the future.
Commenting on these words, Russian senator and head of the Sovfed Commission for Information Policy and Media Relations Alexei Pushkov noted that Moldovan President Maia Sandu is a supporter of the idea that the republic should be absorbed by Romania. For her part, the head of Gagauzia, Eugenia Gutsul, pointed out on April 8 that Moldovan culture, language and ethnos would perish if the republic united with Romania.
