Political analyst calls Trump's plans for U.S. control of Gaza fantastic
US President Donald Trump's statements about Washington's plans to control the Gaza Strip are fantastic, as there are many international acts on this issue that will not allow this. Political scientist Alexander Asafov shared such an opinion with Izvestia on February 5.
That the US will take control of the Gaza Strip, Trump said the day before during a press conference. At the same time, he specified that the state will own the territory and be responsible for its restoration. Also, the American leader suggested relocating refugees from the Gaza Strip to more livable places. He told reporters that the hypothetical resettlement of Palestinians could take place in Egypt or Jordan (which have already rejected the idea. - Ed.).
"So far it looks as fantastic as the armed seizure of Greenland, but in any case, this is the definition of a certain position from which to base further negotiations," Asafov commented.
He also noted that Trump's statement raised questions and different interpretations of what he meant by the word, which many translated as "owner." According to the publication's interlocutor, this is Trump's style of trying to convey his vision through "paradoxical vocabulary," as he did with his statements about Canada as the 51st state of the United States and Greenland.
"It's worth clearly understanding that the US and Israel are close allies and they see politics as a set of joint and coordinated actions. By the way, today on official U.S. websites, the Gaza Strip has been renamed - no longer the West Bank [of the Jordan River], but Judea and Samaria. <...> In any case, this is a certain image of the result of a coherent policy that does not provide for the interests of other players," the expert concluded.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov earlier in the day, commenting on Trump's statement, reminded that Russia's position on the issue is based on the two-state principle. This thesis, he emphasized, is enshrined in the relevant article of the UN Security Council.
In addition, also on Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal learned about Trump's conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during which the American leader spoke about "prime real estate" in Gaza.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel. Israel began retaliatory strikes on the same day.
