EP says split on further aid to Kiev
The European Parliament is split between those who believe that Europe should take help to Ukraine instead of the USA and those who recognize that it is necessary to stop the conflict. French MEP Thierry Mariani told Izvestia.
"The European Parliament is split between those who believe that it is necessary to take help to Ukraine in their own hands instead of the United States and those who look at things more realistically and recognize that it is necessary to stop the conflict", - he said.
In particular, the politician did not rule out that the EU would want to take over the financing of independent Ukrainian media, which were left without money after Donald Trump's decision to freeze foreign financial aid for 90 days.
"When the US is walking down a road leading to a dead end, they can afford to say it's time to stop. In contrast, the European Union, if it sees a wall in front of it, prefers to speed up. The EU will never admit its mistakes. This conflict is destructive not only in terms of economy but also in terms of human lives," he added.
According to Mariani, the EU had many opportunities to stop the conflict, but instead it chose to refuse to negotiate with Russia and continued to help Kiev, thereby condemning thousands of people to death.
On January 30, it became known that only 320 parliamentarians took part in the vote in the Bundestag to allocate an additional €3 billion in aid to Ukraine, which is less than half of the required number of voters, due to which the results were canceled.
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine amid Russia's special operation to protect Donbas, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
