The Russian Federation hopes that Europe understands the absurdity of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's statement (his term of office expired on 20 May 2024) about providing Kiev with nuclear weapons. This was reported by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on February 5.

On the eve Zelensky (term of office expired May 20, 2024) demanded to give Kiev nuclear weapons instead of NATO membership. According to him, the path of the state's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance may take decades and it does not depend on the country itself. He added that nuclear weapons are supposedly necessary for Ukraine to defend itself.

"We would like to hope <...> that there are still some sober understandings of the absurdity and potential danger of discussing such a topic in Europe," Peskov said at a briefing.
