A cloud of natural gas has covered Astrakhan. This was reported by the governor of the region Igor Babushkin on February 5.
He called the reason the launch of the Astrakhan gas processing plant (AGPZ). Earlier, on February 3, Babushkin reported in his Telegram-channel that the enterprise suspended operations before a drone attack by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
He specified that natural gas has a specific odor, which appears after its treatment - the odorization process.
"Now there is a process of commissioning, including the launch of flaring. Those who passed by Aksaraisk saw these flares. Some of them were extinguished due to the shutdown of the plant. Also, during this process there is a release of gas, which is then ignited as on a household gas stove," the governor wrote in his Telegram channel.
Babushkin specified that natural gas is not dangerous for health in the open space. According to the weather service, the gas cloud is shifting to the steppe, he said.
"I would like to warn Astrakhans, in the coming days before the plant goes into scheduled operation such situations are possible. Do not give in to panic!" - concluded the head of the region.
On February 3, Babushkin reported on the recovery work at the Astrakhan gas processing plant after the drone attack. According to him, the enterprise received a signal about the danger of drone attack in advance and suspended work, which allowed to prevent emissions and avoid damage to chemical hazard facilities.
The AFU is trying to strike Russian territories against the background of the special operation in Donbass, the start of which was announced on February 24, 2022. The decision was taken due to the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
