Greenland supported an amendment to make it more difficult to buy real estate
The government and the Committee on Finance and Taxes of the Parliament of Greenland approved an amendment, according to which individuals and legal entities will buy real estate on the island under new rules. The Sermitsiaq newspaper reported on February 4.
"Only natural persons with Danish citizenship or persons who have had permanent residence in Greenland for two years may purchase real estate on the island," the publication said.
Minister of Housing and Infrastructure Hans Peter Poulsen said that the decision to tighten the rules for buying real estate is a consequence of US President Donald Trump' s interest in taking over Greenland. In addition, with the help of the amendment, the authorities want to avoid speculation in trade.
The amendment is being prepared in the form of a text note to the Finance Act 2025.
On January 31, The Examiner reported on Trump's proposal to expand NATO's military presence in the Arctic. According to sources, NATO believes an increased North Atlantic Alliance presence in the Arctic could satisfy security interests while ensuring U.S. participation in the new initiative.
Earlier, on January 15, a USA Today poll showed that 53% of US residents opposed Trump's idea to annex Greenland to the country.
On December 22, 2024, Donald Trump said that for the US to own and control Greenland is an absolute necessity. Prior to that, he had expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was turned down. In the coming year, Trump was also indicated that the island is not and will not be for sale, but Denmark can cooperate more with the US.
