U.S. President Donald Trump said on Feb. 4 that refugees would be better resettled from the Gaza Strip to more livable places in Egypt or Jordan.

Speaking in the Oval Office during the signing of executive orders and other documents just hours before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official visit to the White House, Trump suggested that the Palestinians should be given a new place to live that would be built at the expense of other parties.

"I feel very differently about Gaza than a lot of people. I think they should get a nice, fresh, beautiful piece of land and we will find people who will invest money to build it, make it beautiful, make it livable and nice," the Independent newspaper quoted him as saying.

Trump told reporters that hypothetical Palestinian resettlement could take place in Egypt or Jordan - two countries that have repeatedly rejected the idea of accepting more Palestinian refugees - or in "other places" that "could be very beautiful, safe and nice."

On this day, WP revealed details of the upcoming meeting between Netanyahu and Trump. The Israeli prime minister's visit to the US is reportedly to take the form of a "series of business talks" in which he will discuss with top US officials the Gaza ceasefire, as well as a number of other regional conflicts that Trump would like to "resolve or mitigate."

Earlier, on February 1, Netanyahu intends to announce his desire to fly out to meet with Trump. The Israeli prime minister's office indicated that Netanyahu had agreed with Trump's special envoy for the Middle East to begin talks on the second phase of the Gaza deal in the United States on Feb. 3.

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
