Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024, considers nuclear power plants as a necessary nuclear weapon for blackmail. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, on 4 February.

According to her, Zelensky's statements about his intentions to possess nuclear weapons betrays in him a "maniac" who views the world as an object of his fantasies.

"They also prove that nuclear power plants for him are not a source of peaceful energy, but dirty nuclear weapons needed by the Kiev regime for blackmail," she wrote in her Telegram channel.

Earlier, on February 4, Zelensky demanded to give Ukraine nuclear weapons instead of NATO membership. According to the head of the Kiev regime, the path of Ukraine's accession to NATO may drag on for decades and it does not depend on the country itself. He added that nuclear weapons are allegedly necessary for Ukraine to defend itself.

Before that, on January 21, US President Donald Trump said that he would push NATO member states to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. The head of state drew attention to the fact that Washington has spent $200 billion more on assistance to Kiev than other members of the bloc, and it is time for them to "equalize the situation".

Before that, on January 17, former US President Joe Biden said that the USA had promised Russian President Vladimir Putin not to deploy nuclear weapons in Ukraine and not to admit it to NATO in the near future.

Ukraine applied to join NATO on an expedited basis on September 30, 2022. At the time, Zelenskyy said that in fact the country was already in the alliance and met its standards.
