US President Donald Trump will hold a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday, February 4. This was stated by an aide to the American leader and director of the National Trade Council Peter Navarro newspaper Politico.

Asked whether Trump could lift trade duties on the PRC, as he did with Mexico and Canada, Navarro said it was necessary to wait for the two leaders to talk.

"We'll see what happens with today's call," he said.

Meanwhile, Reuters, citing a statement from a Wall Street Journal reporter, wrote that Xi Jinping and Trump would not talk on Tuesday, despite a comment from the latter's adviser.

"The news that Trump plans to speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday hinted to investors that China has a chance to get a temporary reprieve, just as Trump granted one to Mexico and Canada on Monday. Stocks and oil prices went up," the agency added.

Trump signed an executive order imposing trade tariffs of 25 percent on goods from Canada, China and Mexico on Feb. 1. Then he also promised to impose duties on goods from the EU. With this decision, the American leader seeks to reduce the flow of the opioid fentanyl across the border, as well as the flow of migrants.

However, on February 3, the American leader suspended the introduction of duties for Canada and Mexico for a month.

Later, on February 4, it was reported that China is responding to these moves by imposing duties of 15% on coal and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US. U.S. oil, multi-liter vehicles, pickup trucks and farm machinery will also be subject to tariffs of 10%.

Chinese economist Andrew Leung, in turn, told Izvestia that the tariffs imposed by Trump on imports of goods from China will lead to an increase in consumer prices in the United States itself.
