The Moldovan and Ukrainian authorities have created an energy crisis in Transnistria in order to provoke a humanitarian disaster on the left bank of the Dniester. Igor Dodon, former Moldovan president and leader of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), said in his Telegram channel on February 4.

"The energy crisis in Transnistria is artificial, and it was probably created by [Moldovan President Maia] Sandu's agreement with [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky, whose term expired last May, to provoke a humanitarian catastrophe on the left bank of the Dniester," the statement said.

According to him, Sandu's interest is obvious - in case of destabilization, she has the opportunity to annul the 2025 parliamentary elections. According to his assumptions, President Zelensky's interest is most likely in disrupting peace talks between US leader Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He added that the crisis has been temporarily resolved, but only until next week. Transnistria has no clear mechanism for providing energy resources. Therefore, it is urgent to deal with it.

Earlier, on January 31, Dodon said that the Moldovan and Ukrainian governments deliberately provoked the energy crisis in Transnistria to aggravate the situation in the region. According to him, the region's leadership is being forced to "turn off the switch" at the Cuchurgan power plant, through which the "right bank" receives electricity from Romania. Dodon added that these actions could lead to the de-energization of the entire "right bank" of the Dniester.

Before that, on January 30, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Moldova was interested in using the energy crisis as a weapon against Transnistria. According to her, the statements made by the Moldovan side about its readiness to end "the difficulties experienced by the Transnistrians" are declarations.

Gas supplies from Russia to Moldova and Transnistria stopped on January 1 due to Ukraine 's refusal to prolong the agreement on transit through its territory and debts of the Moldovan side to Gazprom. In mid-January, it became known that Russia was ready to provide assistance to the DMR and start humanitarian gas supplies.
