Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that US President Donald Trump's statements about the possible introduction of duties on goods from the European Union (EU) may be political rhetoric rather than a real threat. This was reported by Bilyonaryo on February 4.

"Nothing should be underestimated, you should be ready for any scenario, but it seems to me that when it comes to duties, the use of this argument against the European Union may be more political rhetoric than a real threat," the agency quoted Tusk as saying.

Tusk also noted that the EU will act together and will be ready to respond to any US action within an hour. He also emphasized that the only possible scenario in case of imposition of duties would be the adoption of mirror response measures.

Earlier, on February 4, Tigran Meloyan, an analyst at the Center for Mediterranean Studies at the National Research University Higher School of Economics, said that the common element in Trump's actions towards China, Canada, Mexico and the EU is aninvitation to dialog from a position of strength. The analyst emphasizes that Trump wants to maintain the elusive unipolar world order, and the US does not need to confront opponents directly.

Before that, on February 1, Trump signed an executive order imposing trade tariffs of 25% on goods from Canada, China and Mexico. Then he also promised to impose duties on goods from the EU. With this decision, the American leader seeks to reduce the flow of the opioid fentanyl across the border, as well as the flow of migrants.
