Russia plays a leading role in ensuring global food security. Sergey Naryshkin, Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) and head of the Russian Historical Society (RHS), said this on February 4 at a roundtable discussion on the history of the fight against hunger and poverty in the world.

"Having overcome many obstacles on its historical path, our country managed not only to defeat hunger, but also to become one of the largest food suppliers in the world. Suffice it to say that by the end of 2024, domestic grain exports amounted to a record 72 million tons. The leading role of our country in ensuring global food security imposes a special responsibility on us, prompting us to make humanitarian deliveries to the most remote parts of the world," Naryshkin said.

Naryshkin also recalled that in 2024 Russia has delivered 200 thousand tons of grain free of charge to six of the poorest countries in Africa, which are overcoming the harsh consequences of their colonial past.

According to Naryshkin, humanity will be able to put an end to hunger only through joint efforts, and Russia's initiative to create the BRICS Grain Exchange and Brazil's project to establish a global alliance to fight hunger and poverty are important steps in this regard.

Earlier, in November 2024, Russian Agriculture Minister Oksana Lut said that Russia is the world's third-largest supplier of food in terms of volume of products sold. She noted that Russia has always been a "grain country," and now, thanks to technological advances, it can produce even more food products.
