US President Donald Trump was satisfied with the results of talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This was stated by the American leader on February 4 on his page in the social network Truth Social.

"As president, I have an obligation to ensure the safety of all Americans, and I am doing just that. I am very pleased with this initial outcome [of the negotiations]," his message reads.

He added that those tariffs previously announced to Canada will be suspended for 30 days. During this time, according to the US President, the possibility of structuring a final economic agreement with Canada will be established, specified "Gazeta.Ru".

On February 3, Director of the White House National Economic Council Kevin Hassett said that the tariffs imposed by Trump on Mexico, Canada and China are aimed at fighting fentanyl, not at launching a trade war. He said Ottawa misunderstood the wording in Trump's executive order, interpreting it as starting a trade war.

Trump signed an executive order on Feb. 1 imposing trade tariffs of 25 percent on goods from Canada, China and Mexico. Then he also promised to impose duties on goods from the European Union. With this decision, Trump seeks to reduce the flow of the opioid fentanyl across the border, as well as the flow of migrants.

Chinese economist Andrew Leung, in turn, told Izvestia that the tariffs imposed by Trump on imports of goods from China and Mexico will lead to an increase in consumer prices in the United States itself.
