Russian scientists have drawn up a map of cancer-causing genetic mutations characteristic of different ethnic groups of the country and discovered previously unknown hereditary features of tumor development. This was reported to Izvestia by the head of the tumor growth biology department of the Petrov National Medical Center of Oncology. N.N. Petrov, RNF grantee Evgeny Imyanitov.

Each ethnos inherits from its forebears not only certain external features, but also unique pathogenic mutations. Therefore, inherited pathologies in each nation have their own peculiarities. The uniqueness of Russia is that we still have homogeneous ethnic communities, the scientist noted.

"We established contacts with different regions and recruited patients with clinical manifestations of hereditary breast cancer in them. We did an analysis of several genes, which showed that although the contribution of BRCA1 and BRCA2 to the disease is comparable across ethnicities, the sets of mutations are different across ethnic groups. This has important practical implications because, knowing them, it is not always necessary to do a complete genomic analysis, and in many cases it is sufficient to test only for certain changes. This makes it possible to adapt the diagnosis and treatment of cancer diseases to national peculiarities", - said Imyanitov.

According to the scientist, now similar work is being done to find national genetic features for other types of cancer.
