- The European Council said it fully supports Denmark's sovereignty in the conflict with the US

The European Union expresses full support to Denmark in defending its sovereignty against the background of statements by US President Donald Trump on the possible annexation of Greenland. European Council President António Costa said this on February 4 at the end of an informal EU summit in Brussels.
"We are ready to defend the principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity [of Denmark]," he said.
According to the politician, Denmark's sovereignty and independence as a member state of the European Union is a fundamental issue for the EU, and the organization will strongly defend the territorial integrity of its members. At the same time, he expressed hope for a constructive dialog with the United States.
"Just as the United States wants to protect its interests, the European Union has a duty to protect the interests of its citizens and our union. This is a dialog that should take place in a normal, calm manner, without tension," said the head of the European Council.
On January 31, The Examiner reported on Trump's proposal to expand NATO's military presence in the Arctic. According to sources, NATO believes that strengthening the North Atlantic Alliance's presence in the Arctic could satisfy security interests while ensuring U.S. participation in the new initiative.
Earlier, on January 15, a USA Today poll showed that 53% of US residents opposed Trump's idea to annex Greenland to the country.
On December 22, 2024, Donald Trump said that for the US to own and control Greenland is an absolute necessity. Prior to that, he had expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was turned down. In the coming year, Trump was also indicated that the island is not and will not be for sale, but Denmark can cooperate more with the US.
