The economic damage suffered by the United States due to the duties against other states, which American President Donald Trump plans to impose, will be temporary. This opinion was expressed by Konstantin Blokhin, a leading researcher at the Center for Security Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and an American political scientist, on Monday, February 3.

Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that US residents have already felt the damage from Trump's duties announced against Mexico, Canada and China, although the tariffs have not yet had time to take effect, RT reports.

According to Blokhin, the market is very sensitive, and any statement by an influential politician will affect both the market and the wallets of ordinary citizens.

"This is a universal principle. Trump is going for aggravation, he understands perfectly well that the US will suffer damage, but this damage will be much greater for opponents, and these opponents are likely to go along. <...> Trump is taking the situation to the extreme and preparing his partner for an acceptable solution. This tactic he worked out during his first term and with now," Blokhin explained in a conversation with Lenta.Ru.

The Americanist added that this damage will be temporary.

Earlier, on February 1, Trump signed an executive order to impose trade tariffs of 25% on goods from Canada, China and Mexico, reports NSN. Then he also promised to introduce duties on products from the EU, according to the website kp.ru.

Then, on February 3, the American President said that he would hold talks on duties with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and representatives of Mexico. Trump noted that he did not expect anything "dramatic" from these meetings.

Trudeau, in turn, announced on February 2 that Ottawa was imposing mirror tariffs of 25% on Washington for $155 billion. The head of the government accused Trump of violating the free trade agreement between the United States and Canada. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has ordered the implementation of a plan to impose retaliatory duties against the US to protect the country's interests. She indicated that Mexico City and Washington must comprehensively combat the proliferation of fentanyl.

A representative of the Chinese embassy in Washington, commenting on the duties, said that the U.S. is violating World Trade Organization (WTO) rules by its unilateral increase in import duties on Chinese goods. This is unconstructive and could harm the fight against drugs.

Chinese economist Andrew Leung, speaking to Izvestia, pointed out that the imposition of duties on goods from China and Mexico would increase consumer prices in the United States itself.
