US President Donald Trump confirmed the temporary suspension of duties of 25% on Mexican goods after telephone conversations with Mexican leader Claudia Sheinbaum. The American president wrote about this on February 3 on his social network Truth Social.

"We have agreed to immediately suspend scheduled duties for one month, during which time negotiations will take place with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and senior Mexican officials. I look forward to personally participating in these talks with President Sheinbaum to try to reach an agreement between our countries," Trump indicated.

The Mexican leader notified the same information on her social media page X (former Twitter).

"As of now, the tariffs are suspended for one month," wrote Sheinbaum.

It is also indicated that the Mexican side will reinforce the northern border with 10,000 National Guard members to prevent the trafficking of narcotics from Mexico to the United States. Washington, on the other hand, will continue to work to prevent the smuggling of weapons into Mexico.

On the same day, White House National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Trump's tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China are aimed at fighting fentanyl, not starting a trade war. He said Canada misunderstood the wording in Trump's executive order, interpreting it as the start of a trade war.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Feb. 1 imposing trade tariffs of 25 percent on goods from Canada, China and Mexico. Then he also promised to impose duties on goods from the EU. With this decision, Trump seeks to reduce the flow of the opioid fentanyl across the border, as well as the flow of migrants.

Chinese economist Andrew Leung, in turn, told Izvestia that the tariffs imposed by Trump on imports of goods from China and Mexico will lead to an increase in consumer prices in the United States itself.
