Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that the scene from the American movie "Independence Day" about aliens made him think about the international role of the United States. He made the statement in an article for the American newspaper The New York Times (NYT) on February 3.

According to him, the scene in the movie in which Americans rallied the entire world to strike back at their enemies "captured the spirit of the times."

"In the mid-1990s, we lived in a unipolar world in which the United States was the only unchallenged world power. At the moment of the crisis, other countries expected America to offer a solution," the Polish foreign minister said.

However, Sikorski emphasized that things are different nowadays and countries are less confident to turn to Washington for leadership.

The minister expressed the opinion that the security of Europe should not be a favor provided by the United States. But the independence of Europeans' security can be compatible with close cooperation with America.

Earlier in the day, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the European Union (EU) will react accordingly to the possible imposition of duties by the new administration of US President Donald Trump, but the EU's goal is cooperation with the United States.

Earlier in the day, European diplomatic chief Kaja Kallas said the EU is preparing for a possible trade war with the United States. According to her, in the case of a trade war, "the only one who will laugh" will be China.

On February 1, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing trade tariffs of 25% on goods from Canada, China and Mexico. At the same time, he promised to impose duties on goods from the EU.

Earlier, on January 29, German Vice Chancellor and Green Party candidate for Chancellor Robert Habeck said that the current US administration, as well as China and Russia allegedly want to destroy the European way of life, and therefore Europe needs to find a unified position to oppose this.
