NATO will assess the level of defense spending in 2025, but it will be much higher than the current 2% of GDP. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told journalists on February 3.

"Later this year we will determine the level of defense spending. It will be significantly higher than 2% of GDP," TASS quoted him as saying.

It is specified that this topic will be decided at the NATO summit to be held in the summer in The Hague.

On the same day, French President Emmanuel Macron said that the country plans to double its defense budget. He added that the main priority is the security of France's borders.

Earlier, on January 29, Mark Rutte after a telephone conversation with the head of the Pentagon Pete Hegseth promised to increase defense spending of the alliance.

Prior to that, on January 21, US President Donald Trump said he would push for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member states to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, and spend more than Washington to support Ukraine.
