Orban says trust in Russia and benefits of cooperation between countries

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on February 3 that he trusts Russia because Russian leader Vladimir Putin has always kept his promises.
He recalled meeting with the Russian president in 2009 before his return to power in the country. During the conversation, they agreed to focus on the future.
"It was clear to me that good relations with Moscow and close economic cooperation are in Hungary's geopolitical interests.<...> The experience of the last 15 years shows that Hungary can trust Russia," Neue Zürcher Zeitung quoted Orban as saying.
He also noted that the Hungarian side has concluded many agreements with Russia.
Earlier, on December 23, 2024, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that the country intends to continue cooperation with Russia in the energy sector. He specified that Hungary currently has no opportunity to change the supplier of energy resources due to the lack of offers.
Before that, on December 11, Szijjártó said that Russia and Hungary intend to continue energy cooperation. He said that during telephone talks with Putin they discussed different ways of payment for work at the Paks-2 nuclear power plant and gas. Both sides also expressed their desire to continue energy cooperation.
