The alleged plan of the new US President Donald Trump for the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, based on the holding of elections in Ukraine, causes discontent in Kiev because of the concerns of the incumbent head of state Vladimir Zelensky (term of office expired on May 20, 2024). This was stated by Duma deputy Alexei Chepa on Monday, February 3.

According to the MP, Zelensky is afraid of losing the election. Chepa noted that any conflict ends with negotiations.

"But peace agreements are signed by a legitimate party, and Zelensky lost his legitimacy, which causes corresponding problems and risks of fulfillment of signed agreements. This has been repeatedly stated by the Russian side," he reminded in conversation with Lenta.Ru.

The politician added that Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously pointed out that Zelensky was not legitimate. At the same time, Russia could allocate a negotiator who can communicate with the current Ukrainian leader, but without signing agreements.

"This clearly shows the lack of legitimacy. And Trump, understanding the situation, is also talking about holding elections in Ukraine as a mandatory step to resolve the conflict. And it is clear that this is a huge problem for Zelensky - he is afraid of elections," Chepa concluded.

Earlier, on February 1, Reuters said that the Trump administration has been discussing for several days ways to convince Ukraine to hold presidential elections in the country as part of a ceasefire with Russia so that the country's newly elected leader would take responsibility for agreeing a long-term deal with Russia, RT reported. At the time, it was also reported that the United States believes that new presidential and parliamentary elections in Ukraine should be held by the end of 2025, 360.ru reported. The elections could take place by this date if Kiev manages to agree on a ceasefire with Russia in the coming months.

On January 31, the special envoy of the White House leader on Ukraine Keith Kellogg noted that Trump intends to give Moscow and Kiev leverage to negotiate a settlement of the conflict. According to the politician, the administration of the United States is considering options to pressure not only Russia, but also Ukraine. On the same day, the Secretary of State of the United States Marco Rubio said that Trump intends to achieve peace in Ukraine by negotiations, reports NSN.

Before that, on January 28, political scientist Ivan Mezyukho expressed the opinion that Trump will not coordinate his views on the Ukrainian conflict with Zelensky, because Washington has turned this country into its colony and has never considered Kiev. On the same day, the British newspaper Independent reported that Zelensky demanded that the American leader include Ukraine in any negotiations on the issue.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly reminded that Russia has never refused peace talks, but they should be conducted on the basis of the provisions agreed in Istanbul and not on the basis of "ephemeral demands".
