Doctors of the N.V. Sklifosovsky Ambulance Research Institute have successfully performed a heart and kidney transplantation for a patient with terminal heart and kidney failure. This was reported by Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development Anastasia Rakova in a conversation with journalists on February 3.

She said that the 31-year-old patient was admitted to the Research Institute of Sklifosovsky after he complained of chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness and edema. His general blood circulation was also impaired, which had a devastating effect on the work of all organs. At the time of admission to the Research Institute, the patient's condition was so critical that only heart transplantation could save him.

However, the situation was complicated by kidney failure, so the doctors decided to transplant not only the heart, but also the kidney. First, the specialists performed heart transplantation, and then - kidney transplantation.

During a month the patient underwent preparatory therapy and was on the emergency waiting list. After a suitable organ became available, the doctors performed a complex heart transplant and simultaneously installed a pacemaker. After making sure that the heart began to work stably, the doctors proceeded to the kidney transplant.

Both operations were successful, the patient was transferred to the ward of the kidney and pancreas transplantation department. His condition has improved, and now he is preparing for discharge, and in the future will be under the supervision of specialists.

"Organ transplantation is the most complex surgical intervention, which is impossible to imagine without modern technological base and application of advanced techniques. This process requires the involvement of a multidisciplinary team of professionals and the use of high-tech equipment," said the deputy mayor.

Rakova also noted that almost all types of organ transplants, including liver, kidney, pancreas, lung, heart and intestine transplants, are performed at the Sklifosovsky Research Institute. For all time, doctors at the NII have done more than 130 heart transplants and more than 2 thousand kidney transplants.

Earlier, in December 2024 it was reported that doctors at the Irkutsk Regional Children's Clinical Hospital for the first time helped a six-month-old child with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) using a domestic drug. It was noted that it was the first time that the treatment with this drug took place not only in the Irkutsk Region, but also in the whole of Siberia.
