Iran condemned US President Donald Trump's proposal to transfer the Palestinian population from the Gaza Strip to neighboring countries, warning that it would amount to "ethnic cleansing." This was reported by The Guardian newspaper on February 3.

According to the publication, Trump sparked public outrage by suggesting that Palestinians leave the Gaza Strip to "just cleanse" the entire enclave, saying that neighboring countries such as Jordan and Egypt should accept more Palestinians, temporarily or permanently.

For his part, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the international community should help the Palestinians "ensure their right to self-determination <...> instead of promoting other ideas that would amount to ethnic cleansing."

Jordan and Egypt, where millions of Palestinians already live, reject the idea of resettling Gaza Strip residents in their countries, The Guardian points out.

The day before, Qatar's head of government and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani said that Qatar does not approve of the US president's proposal, who has floated the idea of resettling Palestinians left homeless from the Gaza Strip to Arab countries. Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan also said that Ankara is "totally against" Trump's proposal.

Earlier, on January 25, media outlets wrote that Trump said that in a conversation with Jordan's King Abdullah II, he expressed his desire for Jordan and Egypt to accept more Palestinians from the Gaza Strip.

On January 28, Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Abbas Araqchi suggested that Israel's residents be relocated to Greenland and thus "kill two birds with one stone."

The ceasefire regime in the Gaza Strip began to operate in the morning of January 19. At the same time, the Palestinian Hamas movement handed over three Israeli hostages - Romy Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher - to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The next day, Israel released the first 90 Palestinian prisoners as part of the deal. The hostage exchange continues.
