The European Union (EU) is preparing for a possible trade war with the United States. This statement was made on February 3 by the head of European diplomacy Kaja Kallas.

"We have listened carefully, and we are preparing from our side. But it is clear that there are no winners in a trade war," she told reporters before an informal EU summit in Brussels.

According to Kallas, in the event of a trade war between the United States and the European Union, "the only one laughing" would be China.

She added, among other things, that the imposition of duties would contribute to higher prices and lead to other negative consequences for both sides. Kallas emphasized that the U.S. and the EU need each other.

German Vice Chancellor and Minister of State Economy from the Green Party Robert Habeck on February 2 announced the EU's readiness to impose retaliatory duties against the United States.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on February 1 to impose trade tariffs of 25% on goods from Canada, China and Mexico. At the same time, he promised to impose duties on goods from the EU.

Chinese economist Andrew Leung, in turn, told Izvestia that the tariffs imposed by Trump on imports of goods from China and Mexico will lead to an increase in consumer prices in the US itself.
