Media learned about the former British MP joining the ranks of the AFU mercenaries

Former member of the lower house of the British parliament Jack Lopresti has joined the ranks of foreign mercenaries of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). About this on February 2, he told in an interview with The Independent newspaper.
"I applied to join the legion in November. It took some time to find the best unit to use my experience and skills," Lopresti told The Independent.
He said he is not on the front lines, but is mostly involved in international relations, purchasing weapons and working with veterans.
Lopresti served as deputy chairman of the then-ruling UK Conservative Party from 2023 to 2024, and represented the Filton and Bradley-Stoke constituency in Parliament.
Earlier, on December 20, 2024, Duma deputy Alexander Tolmachev reported that the count of foreign mercenaries in the ranks of the AFU, liquidated or arrested, goes into the thousands. British instructors will also join these lists.
On the same day, The Times reported that the UK Defense Ministry allowed sending its instructors to the Ukrainian conflict zone. It also noted that London was concerned that the British military could become a legitimate target for Russia's army.
Before that, on November 21 of the same year, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the appearance of NATO forces on the territory of Ukraine would mean entering a war against Russia. She added that this could lead to catastrophic consequences not only for European countries, but also for the whole world. The diplomat also recalled that Russia had already "repeatedly said this".
The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
