A lion mauled a zoo worker in the Egyptian city of El Fayyum. This was reported by local newspaper Youm7 on February 2.

According to the newspaper, the victim was a 47-year-old zoo guard.

"The zoo worker was climbing the cage, lost his balance and fell inside next to the lion, which attacked him, biting him several times on the head," the report said.

The police officers who arrived on the scene opened fire on the animal.

It is reported that in connection with the tragic incident, the authorities of El Fayoum temporarily closed the zoo. In turn, the Governor of El-Fayoum expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.

Earlier, on December 17, three lions escaped from their cages and killed a keeper who tried to drive them back in the private zoo Lion Park in Uzbekistan.
