US President Donald Trump does not intend to give up territorial claims to Greenland despite objections from the European Union (EU). This was announced on February 2 by Vice President of the United States James David Vance.

According to him, Greenland is important for the national security of the United States. According to him, the sea lanes near the island are used by China and Russia, and Denmark, which controls Greenland, is not a good ally of the States.

"That means we have to take a greater territorial interest in Greenland, which is exactly what President Trump is going to do. Because he doesn't care about what the Europeans are yelling at us. He cares about putting the interests of American citizens first," he said in an interview with Fox News. His words are quoted by TASS.

On December 22, 2024, Trump said that for the US ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity. Before that, he expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was rejected.

On January 25, 2025, the Financial Times (FT) reported that Trump insisted on acquiring Greenland during a telephone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. It was specified that Trump was aggressive and set for conflict. On January 27, it became known that Denmark will spend 14.5 billion Danish kroner ($2.05 billion) to strengthen its military presence in the Arctic due to the U.S. president's interest in gaining control over Greenland.

Bloomberg reported on Jan. 28 that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen went on a European tour over Greenland amid Trump's push to bring the island under U.S. control.

A Jan. 29 poll showed that more than 80% of Greenlanders surveyed opposed joining the United States. About 6% said they were not against joining the United States, while 9% were still undecided. It was noted that the vote was conducted with 497 adult residents of the island.
