The Czech ANO party, which is leading in opinion polls ahead of parliamentary elections, has promised to suspend its initiative to buy ammunition for Ukraine if it wins, the Financial Times (FT) reported on February 2.

According to Czech Deputy Foreign Minister Eduard Hulicius, last year 520,000 shells of 155 mm caliber were delivered to Kiev, and the plan is to transfer another 300,000 shells in 2025.

Against this background, the "liberal government" in Prague warned that ANO party leader Andrej Babiš may refuse to help Ukraine and instead strengthen ties with leaders of countries that support Russia - Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Orban, his Slovakian counterpart Robert Fitzo and aspiring Austrian Chancellor Herbert Kickl.

Elections of deputies to the lower house of the Czech parliament are to be held by the end of October 2025.

Earlier, on February 1, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that despite hundreds of billions of euros in Western aid, Ukraine's troops were retreating. He added that, among other things, for the sake of Kiev, anti-Russian sanctions were imposed, which destroyed relations between Russia and Europe.

Back in September 2024, Czech President Petr Pavel said that the Ukrainian authorities should come to terms with the loss of some territories during the conflict with Russia. He emphasized that in the current time Kiev and its allies need to "face reality" and make appropriate decisions.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by the Russian president on February 24, 2022, is ongoing. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
