Vilfand reported the onset of the cold analog of El Niño

At present, the Earth is experiencing a natural phenomenon La Niña, which is associated with a decrease in water temperature in the equatorial part of the Pacific Ocean and affects weather conditions on almost the entire planet. This was reported to "RIA Novosti" on February 2 by the scientific head of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center Roman Vilfand.
According to the preliminary forecast, he noted, this phenomenon will not be prolonged and will move into a neutral phase as early as April.
"Now La Niña is observed, not intense, it will last, according to estimates, in February and even in March. Sometime in March or April it will start to move into a neutral phase. That is not very long and not intense La Niña," the forecaster said.
In addition, Vilfand noted that the return of El Niño in 2025 is not yet predicted, but experts can not rule out such a variant.
Earlier, on October 11, 2024, Vilfand said that the El Niño phase has ended and a colder La Niña has begun. According to him, the La Niña phenomenon is expected to be intense in December, January, February and March. He specified that so far its influence has not been clearly registered on the territory of Russia.
