US President Donald Trump said on January 31 that he intends to hold a conversation with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and put an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

Trump noted that he was having very serious discussions with Russia about ending the Ukrainian conflict. He expressed hope that something substantial could be achieved as a result of such contacts. At the same time, Trump did not clarify what exactly he means.

"We will talk and possibly do something substantial," Reuters quoted him as saying during a White House briefing.

Also, the American leader said about serious discussions between Russian Federation and the United States.

Earlier, on January 30, Trump refused to comment on a possible conversation with Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He did not respond to a question about when he last contacted the Russian leader and whether the Chinese leader had responded to a request for assistance in resolving the crisis on the US border.

On January 27, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation with Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and assured that Trump was indeed committed to resolving the Ukrainian conflict.

Meanwhile, Putin said on January 24 that his relations with Trump are trusting and pragmatic. The head of state noted that it was not Russia's fault that the previous U.S. administration had refused contacts with the Russian side, adding that Moscow had never refused them.

On January 22, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that there is a window of opportunity for agreements with the new administration of the US president. He stressed the importance of understanding how to build relations with Washington to maximize opportunities and minimize risks.

Prior to that, on January 20, Trump's inauguration took place, after which he said he planned to meet with Putin as soon as possible and discuss the conflict in Ukraine. In turn, the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis a priority for Trump. According to him, "part of the preparatory work" has begun.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the Russian Federation considers Trump's desire to establish direct communication with Moscow commendable. According to him, if it is possible to return relations to a more normal state, it will be a significant achievement. Before that, he noted that the administration of former U.S. President Joe Biden had caused huge damage to U.S.-Russian relations.
