Forbes reported on Ukraine's gas imports due to a shortage of its own gas

The Ukrainian company Naftohaz has started importing gas in order to pass the heating season, despite the fact that in July the company said that the country would survive the winter on its own gas. This was reported by the Ukrainian version of Forbes magazine on January 31.

"So far, imports are small - 100 million cubic meters, but may need 10 times more to pass the winter without shutdowns," the publication said.

It is noted that the purchase of 100 million cubic meters of Ukraine cost €5 million. The cost of the entire volume of gas, which is going to be purchased for heating, is €500-550 million.

If winter frosts intensify and Ukraine's own gas reserves do not suffice, it may result in mass heating cuts. According to the Kiev authorities, Ukraine consumed 19.7 billion cubic meters of gas in 2024, while it produced 18.2 billion cubic meters. Imports amounted to 722.7 million cubic meters. According to experts, the current heating season should end for the first time for the country with almost empty storages.

Earlier, on November 21, 2024, the press service of the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine said about the critical situation with heating. Thus, in November in Kryvyi Rih Dnipropetrovska reported about the disconnection of heat in 934 houses, 11 health care institutions, 43 educational institutions and the territorial center of social protection. It was specified that about 110 thousand residents were left without heating.

Before that, on November 4, 2024, Ukrainian geopolitical analyst and veteran of the country's Armed Forces Viktor Kovalenko admitted that the coming winter will be the most difficult for Ukraine since February 2022, against the background of problems with electricity may appear ghost towns.
