Russian Federation starts development of domestic power plant for border boats

Mikhail Danilenko, Managing Director of Kingisepp Machine Building Plant (KMZ), told Izvestia on February 3 that a domestic power plant has been developed for high-speed Russian border boats.

Now the most common innovative power units of boats or ships consist of a diesel engine, a propeller shaft, and an electric motor. Hybrid drive takes an important place in such a scheme. With the help of a diesel geared unit, the hybrid drive ensures the movement of the watercraft on two interconnected power units: diesel and electric.

The diesel-gear unit allows to transfer additional torque from the electric motor to the main shaft coming from the diesel engine. That is, the power of two power units can be used simultaneously.

"The system consists of two components - the power plant and the electric drive. The electric motor is placed on the engine shaft, adding torque by the converter," explained Alexey Kim, Chief Designer of KMZ.

This solution increases the power of the diesel internal combustion engine in short-term mode, and consequently, the speed of the boat or vessel. The novelty will also be useful for civil shipbuilding. Izvestia was informed in KMZ that the hybrid unit will be used on the hydrofoil vessel Meteor 120R. Almost 300 million rubles have been allocated for the project realization. The plant will create more than 100 jobs during the works.

"The uniqueness of this project lies in the new hybrid drive with electric motor elements. It will allow Meteor 120P to moor without using diesel engine, thus ensuring environmental friendliness in the coastal zone", - said the managing director of KMZ.

Earlier, on January 30, Sergei Chernyshev, scientific director of the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute, vice president and academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Izvestia that Russia is developing unconventional aircraft designs. One of them is a helicopter that can turn into an airplane in flight. He added that the development is protected by a Russian patent.
