The NATO military alliance has developed a proposal for U.S. President Donald Trump to expand the military presence of allies in the Arctic in order to defuse the situation around Greenland. This was reported by The Examiner newspaper on January 31, citing sources in the bloc itself.

"The aim is to ease tensions around Greenland's status as an autonomous territory of Denmark. The issue has attracted attention because of Trump's interest in the island, which he justifies on USsecurity grounds," the article said.

According to sources, NATO believes that an increased North Atlantic Alliance presence in the Arctic could satisfy these security interests while ensuring US participation in the new initiative.

Earlier on January 31, a YouGov poll showed that nearly half of Danish residents (46%) see the US as a "significant threat" because of President Trump's statements on Greenland's annexation. This figure was higher than the number who see the DPRK (44%) and Iran (40%) as a threat. The vast majority - 78% of those polled - oppose the sale of Greenland to the United States.

Before that, on January 26, Trump, answering questions from reporters in Las Vegas, expressed confidence that the United States would get Greenland. A day earlier, during a telephone conversation with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the American leader insisted on the acquisition of Greenland. It was reported that Trump was aggressive and set for conflict.

Earlier, on January 15, a USA Today poll showed that 53% of US residents opposed Trump's idea to annex Greenland to the country.

On December 22, 2024, Donald Trump said that for the US to own and control Greenland is an absolute necessity. Prior to that, he had expressed interest in buying the island from Denmark in 2019, but was turned down. In the coming year, Trump was also indicated that the island is not and will not be for sale, but Denmark can cooperate more with the US.
