Media reported a "triple failure" of the EU over duties on Russian fertilizers

The United States reported about the "triple failure" of the European Union (EU) amid the imposition of duties on Russian fertilizers. This was reported by Politico newspaper on January 31.
"While we understand the legitimacy of the geopolitical reasons that prompted the European Commission to make this decision, the agricultural sector will have to face the economic consequences of such decisions," the material said.
According to the newspaper, the decision, which was supposed to be a "triple victory" for the EU through measures against revenue generation of the Russian Federation, as well as assistance to fertilizer production and reduce price increases, is more like a "triple failure".
It is noted, restrictions on fertilizers from the Russian Federation may cause increased costs for producers in Europe and suppliers from third countries.
Earlier, on January 29, EU agricultural producers opposed new barrier duties on fertilizers from Russia, which proposed to introduce the European Commission (EC).
The fact that the EC plans to introduce duties on agricultural products, nitrogen fertilizers from Russia and Belarus became known on January 28. It was noted that the tariffs will support the growth of domestic production and the EU fertilizer industry, which suffered during the energy crisis, as well as allow to diversify supplies from third countries. At the same time, the EC approved duties on a number of agricultural products from Russia and some nitrogen fertilizers. At the same time, exports of Russian agricultural products and fertilizers to third countries will remain unchanged.
In June 2024, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that Russia's retaliatory measures to the EU decision to raise duties on imported Russian and Belarusian agricultural products would not be long in coming. In her opinion, these are not trade and political measures, but another anti-Russian sanctions.
