An expert spoke about the impact of the closure of Svetofor on Russian retailers

The impact of Svetofor's departure on the market will be twofold. The elimination of the chain, which was found to have multiple violations of sanitary norms, will contribute to improving the quality of goods on the shelves of the remaining stores. Retailers will begin to monitor the condition of their goods more closely, learning from the experience of competitors. Konstantin Derevskov, who heads the consulting company "Quality Start", told "Izvestia" on January 31.
The closure of the "Svetofor" retail chain, which is among the top five largest federal retailers, may result in higher prices for food products. This is due to the fact that retail chains conduct regular monitoring of market prices, which take into account price offers from "Svetofor".
The departure of a large discounter, which is Svetofor, may lead to an increase in the cost of goods in other retail chains. This is due to the fact that discounters like Svetofor compete in the market by selling goods at lower prices. In case of its closure, however, competitive mechanisms may suffer, reducing the pressure on prices.
Earlier, January 14, it was reported that Rospotrebnadzor will conduct unscheduled inspections in the retail chain "Svetofor" amid numerous violations - sales of low-quality and unsafe products.
January 29, it was reported that in Moscow, about half of the stores of the chain "Svetofor" may suspend their activities due to violations of sanitary and epidemiological legislation. It was specified that during inspections in the stores were found insects, as well as garbage and dirt in the loading rooms. Also expired and low-quality goods were revealed.
