The IT sector's contribution to Russia's GDP will exceed 2.2% by the end of 2024. This was announced by Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Mikhail Mishustin during his speech at the Digital Almaty 2025 forum on January 31.

"Over five years, the contribution of the domestic IT sector to GDP has increased more than 1.7 times. It exceeded 2.2% of GDP at the end of last year. We have more than 1 million people involved in this industry," Mishustin said.

In addition, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of independence from other people's technological solutions. According to Mishustin, only by having its own developments in the areas of the global digital architecture the state can develop dynamically, strengthen the economy and ensure a high standard of living for citizens.

He also noted Russia's serious approach to these issues and its readiness to share its experience in building its own IT technologies.

"An uncompromising technological race is underway, which will determine the contours of the future world order. And at the same time, the contradiction of building a global digital architecture is becoming more and more clearly manifested", - said the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation.

Earlier, on January 17, the mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin said that the volume of exports of high-tech products and IT-services increased by 2.1 times. He noted that in 2024 the number of export contracts that were concluded with the support of the Moscow Export Center (MEC) reached more than 26 billion rubles, which exceeded the figures of 2023 by 37%.

Prior to that, on December 12, 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the idea of Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadaev to involve IT companies that enjoy tax benefits in Russia in mandatory teaching at universities. He called such a proposal fair, as it directly applies to the business of IT companies.
