- In Britain, a court has overturned the right to develop the largest oil and gas field in Britain

The Court of Session of Scotland canceled the permits of the former UK government to develop the largest oil and gas field in the country. This was reported by Sky News TV channel on January 30.
It is about the oil and gas field Rosebank and gas field Jackdaw in the North Sea.
As the publication notes, last year, the initiative groups appealed to the court with a request to review permits for the development of the fields. They argued the permits did not take into account the types of emissions from the projects.
"The public interest in the authorities acting lawfully and the private interests of members of the public in relation to climate change outweigh the private interests of the developers.<...> The permits will be [revoked] and may be re-adopted, this time taking into account downstream emissions," the judge said of his decision.
It is clarified that the companies are allowed to continue working on their projects, but not to extract minerals.
"We welcome today's decision and are pleased with the outcome, which allows us to continue to develop the Rosebank project while we await further approvals," said a Rosebank spokesperson.
The UK government's Department of Energy, in turn, emphasized that updated guidance on environmental assessments, under which companies will be able to reapply for permits will be issued in the spring of 2025.
On January 10, the British company Centrica reported that the UK's gas reserves in storage have fallen to "alarmingly low" levels amid the interruption of Russian gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine and a colder than usual winter. As indicated, as of January 9, UK storage facilities are 26% below last year's reserves. They remain about half full.
