The administration of US President Donald Trump has demanded that some high-ranking members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) resign or retire. This was reported by CBS News on January 30, citing sources.

"High-ranking officials of the FBI were asked to retire or resign from senior positions," the TV channel said in its material.

The interlocutors of the publication specified that if the demand is not fulfilled, the officials will be forcibly dismissed. People who received this demand, held high positions in the FBI headquarters in Washington, including assistant executive director. They oversaw critical lines of the bureau's work, including national security, crime and cyber threats, the TV station noted.

The sources said such decisions were made in connection with the Senate confirmation hearings for Trump's nominee, Kash Patel, to head the FBI. Patel, in turn, tried to assure everyone that any action against FBI employees would only happen if there were factual and legal grounds. According to him, no illegal action will be taken.

Earlier, on January 28, it was reported that the U.S. Department of Justice fired more than a dozen employees involved in cases against American President Donald Trump. The firing of employees who worked on special prosecutor Jack Smith's team is in line with the administration's "determination to purge the government of employees it considers disloyal to the president."

Prior to that, on January 20, Trump's team demanded the resignation of dozens of senior State Department diplomats in order to demonstrate a "decisive break" with the outgoing administration of current U.S. President Joe Biden. It is noted that American diplomats, including US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs John Bass and Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Jeffrey Pyatt, will leave their posts from noon on Monday after receiving instructions from Trump's aides.
