The airplane crash that occurred in Washington, DC, could have happened because one of the helicopter pilots was wearing night vision goggles. This was stated by US President Donald Trump on January 30 during his speech on the plane crash, which was broadcast on the White House YouTube channel.

"There are reports that one of the helicopter pilots may have been using night vision goggles <...> it can distort your view if you have a night vision device. So it's entirely possible that it could have happened," Trump said.

The president also noted that the military aviation helicopter was in the wrong place at the wrong time. According to Trump, the tragedy probably happened because of this.

On the night of January 30, an American Airlines passenger plane and a Black Hawk military helicopter collided near Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C. After the crash, they fell into the Potomac River. A total of 60 passengers and four crew members were aboard the plane. There were three military personnel in the helicopter. The television company NBC News reported that the bodies of more than 30 victims were extracted from the water. In turn, US President Donald Trump reported the absence of survivors in the airplane crash in Washington.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that there were Russian citizens in the plane that crashed in Washington. Peskov said that there were Russian figure skaters on board the passenger plane. He expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died in the airplane crash.

Later, CNN reported that one of the flight recorders (black boxes) of the crashed passenger plane was recovered from the Potomac River near Washington. ABC News, citing a source familiar with the situation, reported that both flight recorders - voice and parametric - of the passenger plane had been found.
