The animated series "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" has appeared online, the first two episodes are available. The new project continues to develop a line of stories about the most popular Marvel superhero in an alternate universe and allows you to pass the time while waiting for the final part of the animated blockbuster "Spider-Man: Beyond the Universe". Critics are calling the new animated series a breath of fresh air in the entire franchise and at the same time a love letter to Spider-Man fans. "Izvestia" watched the first episodes and collected everything that is known about the ambitious project.

The series could become an animated prequel trilogy with Tom Holland

The new animated series "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" was renewed for a third season even before the first one started airing on Disney+. This was announced on the eve of the premiere by Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming, television and animation at Marvel Studios. The project has received unanimously high marks from the press, it has 96% positive reviews on critic review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.

Marvel's Spider-Man, along with DC Comics' Batman, has been one of the most prolific characters in pop culture for decades. In addition to comic books and animated series, we keep in mind three feature-length franchises starring Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland, video games and the Oscar-winning animated film Spider-Man: Across Universes. Audiences have seen Peter Parker and his alter ego in many different variations and with many different companions.

"Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" is a tale of Peter in an alternate timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where he is just beginning his journey as Spider-Man. But this time it' s not Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, who mentors the young Spidey, but Norman Osborn, also a scientist but better known as the antagonist in the Green Goblin costume. This cleverness allows the writers to go down previously untrodden paths in the already well-known friendship and confrontation plot with the scientist's son Harry Osborn.

- The huge spike in multiverse narratives has proven time and time again that no version of this character will be definitive. But when done right, each new rendition complements the existing "lore" while giving birth to a new, unique atmosphere. "'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man' is indeed a welcome addition to the ever-growing legacy of the wall-crawler," writes Empire magazine film critic Amon Warman.

Created by Jeff Trammell, the animated series was positioned as a prequel to the John Watts trilogy starring Tom Holland (this is evident even in the animated Peter's appearance). "Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man" was supposed to introduce viewers to the details that were not revealed in "First Avenger: Confrontation" and in "Homecoming", when yesterday's schoolboy became a local legend.

Now the project unfolds in an animated world that adjoins the well-known canon only in the first scene of the first episode. Freshman Peter Parker, voiced by Hudson Thames (who also voiced Spider-Man in the animated series "What If...?"), is driven by his recently widowed Aunt May to the famous Midtown High School. However, before Peter can step outside the door of the school, a portal appears with Dr. Strange chasing an alien monster. And although he manages to subdue it, amidst the resulting chaos Peter is bitten by a radioactive spider and gives the 15-year-old incredible strength and agility.

A couple months later, the hero transfers to Bales Middle School - nothing is left of Midtown after the previous incident. Peter has fully come to terms with being Spider-Man, but balancing the mystery with friends, including his sweetheart Pearl Pangan, classmate Nico Minoru, and the school's popular athlete Lonnie Lincoln, is difficult. Every spare minute Parker races around New York City in a homemade suit and fights criminals. The series uses the timeless trope: with great power comes great responsibility, and the further the series goes, the more and more Peter's loved ones find themselves drawn into his superhero life.

A new take on an old story

The first thing we want to praise the new series for is the typical teenage issues: friendship, love, self-actualization. In the previous Spidey stories they all quickly faded into the background, but after all, this is an important feature of young Spider-Man: Parker is only 15 years old. Beginning his internship at the Oscorp engineering corporation, Peter finds a father figure in the person of its head, Norman Osborn. As you know, not the easiest hero of the franchise, but the relationship with him here gives the necessary tension for the plot.

The second is the visual solution of the series, which combines 2D and 3D animation. Of course, there will be those who will criticize the project in comparison with the high-tech and multi-budget animated full-length "Spider-Man", whose threequel with the subtitle "Beyond the Universe" was postponed indefinitely. The animation in Trammel's series is an allusion to the visual style of one of Spider-Man's fathers, Steve Ditko, and actually resembles... a retro comic book! Even the opening splash page changes with each episode to make a reference to the iconic covers of the original Spider-Man issues.

- Although the animation seems ripped from the 1960s, the music for the project chose to be more modern, adding hip-hop vibes from the East Coast. "This fusion of classic and modern really pays off, as it gives 'Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man' a unique identity compared to past iterations," notes Collider reviewer Mike Thomas.

There are still eight episodes to go, but so far, the new Spider-Man, like Peter Parker himself, can only be characterized as charming, even as one wishes the writers of seasons two and three would bet on a tighter narrative. We all know who Norman Osborn and Otto Octavius will become, and pretty much every character that appears with each new episode, but that doesn't take away from the fact that the new series is a fresh and clear look at Peter Parker and the story as a whole. And just a reverent love letter to all Spider-Man fans.
