The volume of gas in Ukraine 's underground storage facilities has dropped to a critical 10%, which is a historical minimum in the country. This was reported by Reuters on January 29, citing the words of the former head of the Ukrainian transit operator Serhiy Makogon.

"Gas reserves in Ukraine's storages have fallen almost to the critical 10% mark. The country urgently needs to start importing large volumes to meet its own needs," Makogon said.

According to him, according to the results of last year, the storages were filled at the level of 20%, and at the beginning of 2023 - at 22-23%. Makogon added that the current volumes of gas production cannot cover all of Ukraine's needs, especially during the winter period.

The same was stated by the Minister of economy of Slovakia Denisa Sakova on her page in the social network Facebook (owned by the corporation Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).

"The volume of gas in Ukrainian storages has fallen to the critical 10% mark. After the termination of Russian transit, Ukraine needs to import at least 100 million cubic meters per month," she said.

The minister also specified that the weather forecast for February indicates a drop in temperature. As a consequence, gas prices will increase and will soon reach the maximum for the whole of Europe this year.

On January 28, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fitzo said that if the Ukrainian authorities do not resume gas transit, Slovakia will block all assistance from the EU. He emphasized that "the threat of retaliatory measures is the only language that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired in May 2024) understands".

"Gazprom" on January 1, 2025 announced the suspension of Russian gas supplies to the EU via Ukraine. Prime Minister Fitzo noted that this would have drastic consequences for the EU, but not for Russia.
