Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed the situation in Syria with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud by phone. This is reported on January 30 on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The foreign ministers had a thorough exchange of views on a number of topical issues on the regional agenda with a focus on the situation in Syria," the statement reads.

It is specified that the ministers reaffirmed a common position on consolidating efforts to resolve the crisis in the Middle East.

They also discussed some practical issues of further strengthening of multifaceted friendly Russian-Saudi relations.

Earlier, on January 25, Lavrov and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al-Thani held talks by phone, expressing support for Syria's unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence. The ministers pointed out that the international community should help stabilize the situation in the Arab Republic as soon as possible.

On December 26, 2024, Lavrov said that Russia is interested in a dialog with the new Syrian authorities. Moscow plans to discuss not only security issues, but also the regional agenda. He confirmed that Russia is ready to support Syria in consolidating processes and help organize elections in which all political groups should participate.

The situation in Syria escalated as a result of a major attack by armed formations in Aleppo and Idlib, which began on November 28 and led to the Syrian army's retaliation.
