In Tunisia, 11 detained Russians suspected of involvement in terrorism

The 11 Russians detained in Tunisia have not yet been charged. At the same time, the grounds for detention are still suspicions that Russian citizens are involved in terrorist activities. This was reported on January 30 by the agency "RIA Novosti" with reference to the Russian Embassy in Tunisia.

"The basis for the detention of compatriots is still suspicions of involvement in terrorist activities. According to law enforcers, the detainees were found to have equipment that does not correspond to the declared tourist purposes," the statement said.

In addition, the embassy does not exclude the possibility that the case will be reconsidered and reclassified on less serious grounds.

The detained Russians were provided with the services of a lawyer and an interpreter. Their well-being is satisfactory, they have no complaints about violations of their rights.

Earlier, on January 29, the media reported that the Russian tourists detained in Tunisia were distributed among three prisons in the country.

The detention of a group of Russian tourists in Tunisia became known on December 17, 2024. They were sent to the prison Mornagia, famous for cruel conditions and torture. Then the fiancée of one of the detainees said that the travelers were visited by representatives of the consulate, but due to the lack of interpreters, the investigation is moving very slowly.

On the same day, the diplomatic mission said that the Russian Embassy in Tunisia was in contact with the country's authorities regarding the detained Russians. After familiarizing themselves with the situation, the diplomats noted that the rights of Russian citizens placed in prison were not violated.

Later, on January 11, the fiancée of one of the travelers said that the Russian tourists detained in Tunisia are still in custody without officially filed charges.
