- Ukraine's language ombudsman complained about the Russian language in the country's TV airwaves

The language ombudsman of Ukraine, Taras Kremin, said on 30 January that the Russian language continues to be used on the air of the country's TV channels contrary to the constitution.
"Unfortunately, in the airwaves of certain TV channels continues the practice of inviting to discuss security issues, international or public experts speaking in Russian, without translation, dubbing and dubbing in Ukrainian," he wrote in the social network Facebook (owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist and banned in Russia).
According to him, mixing Russian and Ukrainian languages, which is often found in the media sphere, is incompatible with the status of the state language. This practice should be stopped, Kremin emphasized.
Before that, on January 28, Ukrainian political analyst Kostyantyn Bondarenko said that young people in the country have started to speak Russian predominantly, especially in large cities. He argues that the active promotion of Ukrainian paradoxically contributes to the strengthening of Russian in Ukraine in the long term.
Earlier the same day, a member of the Verkhovna Rada, Oleksandr Dubynskyy, who is in remand prison, said that the Russian language in Ukraine should be granted the status of a second state language.
On 26 October 2024, political analyst Inna Litvinenko called the appearance of language inspectors in Ukraine an absurd practice. According to her, they will not be able to enforce compliance with anything.
In December 2023, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed a bill on national minorities, tightening restrictions on the use of the Russian language in the country. Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a law banning the Russian language on May 15, 2019.
