The Historical Museum celebrates its birthday

On February 9, 2025 the State Historical Museum celebrates its birthday - 153 years since its foundation. In honor of this memorable date, visitors will be able to see the permanent exposition of the museum at a discount.

On February 9, 150 years ago on this very day the highest permission of Emperor Alexander II to establish the Historical Museum named after Tsesarevich Alexander Alexandrovich in Moscow was received. Today the State Historical Museum is one of the largest museums in the world and the largest museum in Russia. Its complex includes St. Basil's Cathedral with a monument to Minin and Pozharsky, the Chambers of the Romanov Boyars on Varvarka, the Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812 and an exhibition complex on Revolution Square, a complex of restoration workshops in Izmailovo, and a branch in Tula. In the coming years, the Central Museum of the Russian Cossacks and the Exposition and Exhibition Center near the Novodevichy Monastery will be opened as part of the GIM complex.

In the first years after its opening, the museum collection consisted of several tens of thousands of items, and now the collection contains more than five million items. The museum complex is developing with new branches in Moscow and beyond. Today the Historical Museum feels its special responsibility as the main keeper and popularizer of historical knowledge", - says Alexey Levykin, General Director of the Historical Museum.

On February 9, 2025 the Main Building of the Historical Museum, the building of the Exhibition Complex, the Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Pokrovsky Cathedral will be open until 21.00 (ticket offices - until 20.00).
